The Right Permits for Your Houston Portable Buildings

A relatively small investment in Houston portable buildings can provide added support for outdoor activities, construction sites and other events. Making sure that all necessary permits are in place for these installations can help you manage your upcoming events and corporate warehousing requirements more effectively. Many Houston tent rental companies can help with permitting and it is a good idea to check with them first. Here are some points to keep in mind when planning a tent rental or Houston portable buildings installation.

Rules Vary by Municipality

Depending on where you plan to install your tent or portable building, you may require a permit from the city or local government.

  • In the city of Houston, for example, the Department of Public Works and Engineering requires the filing of a temporary building permit and the payment of a fee to the Building Code Enforcement Branch prior to the installation of Houston temporary structures. These temporary buildings or tents must remain in place for no more than 180 days. Plans must also be filed that provide information on drainage, ramps, stairs and utility connections and the overall structure of the temporary building.
  • The city of Austin requires permits for tents that cover more than 400 square feet, including multiple tents with areas that exceed 400 square feet in total. Air-supported temporary membrane structures of more than 100 square feet also require permits. Restrictions on smoking, combustible materials and the number of occupants allowed inside the structure are also enforced by the city of Austin.

The rules established by other municipalities, counties and local government entities may vary. In some areas, no permit may be required at all, especially for structures that are expected to be in place for a relatively short period of time.

Comply With Fire Codes

Touching base with your local fire department is always a good idea when planning your Houston tent rental or portable structure installation. Fire codes may require exit signage, fire extinguishers and other safety equipment for your tent or temporary building. By making sure you stay on the right side of these regulations, you can ensure the safest and most practical solution for your business needs and no problems from local officials
